Role: Lead Network Engineer

Location: Phoenix, AZ

Work Location: On-site

Overview

The selected candidate will coordinate and support the implementation of current network improvement projects, including:

  • Deployment of Palo Alto firewalls to Fire Stations throughout the region.
  • Configuration of OSPF and BGP routing changes to decrease failover times.
  • Increasing the resiliency and security of the CAD network.
  • Participation in a 24/7 on-call standby rotation to support operational needs.
  • Driving to customer sites for field support activities.

Responsibilities

  1. Design, implement, and manage Cisco Catalyst, Cisco Nexus, and Palo Alto Networks-based network infrastructure, including routers, switches, and firewalls for the Fire Department’s CAD network.
  2. Troubleshoot and resolve complex network issues, ensuring high availability and performance.
  3. Perform network configurations, upgrades, and patch management on network devices.
  4. Monitor network performance and conduct routine health checks to proactively identify and mitigate issues.
  5. Provide technical leadership and mentorship to network engineers and other team members.
  6. Collaborate with City departments and third-party vendors to support network-related projects, deployments, and new technologies.
  7. Conduct capacity planning, performance analysis, and assist with network scalability strategies.
  8. Utilize network monitoring tools to track and analyze network traffic and performance metrics.
  9. Ensure network security best practices are followed and recommend enhancements to protect against vulnerabilities and threats.
  10. Work on-site at Fire and partner facilities throughout the metro area to perform or coordinate equipment installations and repairs, including copper and fiber cabling, access control, and CCTV systems.
  11. Maintain comprehensive documentation of network architecture, configurations, and troubleshooting procedures.
  12. Provide excellent customer service by effectively communicating with Fire Department staff, vendors, stakeholders, and partners.
  13. Assist the IT Manager in developing the annual operating budget and Capital Improvement Plan for network infrastructure components.
  14. Perform other duties related to information technology systems as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Experience

  • Minimum five (5) years of recent experience in:
  • Planning, designing, and maintaining large-scale networks.
  • Configuring, managing, and troubleshooting Cisco IOS and Cisco Nexus devices.
  • Configuring, managing, and troubleshooting Palo Alto Networks Next-Generation Firewalls and Panorama.

Technical Skills

  • Routing protocols: BGP, OSPF, and EIGRP.
  • Point-to-point VPNs, IPsec, and NAT.
  • Quality of Service (QoS) implementation.
  • Copper and fiber premise cabling installation and troubleshooting.
  • Network monitoring and management tools including:
  • Splunk
  • ServiceNow
  • Jira
  • SolarWinds Orion

Leadership Experience

  • Supervising and directing a small team of full-time and contract employees.
  • Supporting 24/7 critical operations, preferably within a Public Safety environment.
